About Singular and Plural
English plurals are mostly regular and occasionally not, and the exceptions are exactly the words children use most - child, foot, tooth, man. This game shows a picture with a specific number of objects and asks for the right form, so the child has to notice how many there are and then apply the correct rule, rather than reciting a list of plurals.
What this game teaches
- Adding -s for regular plurals
- Adding -es after s, x, ch and sh
- Changing y to ies after a consonant
- Changing f or fe to ves
- Irregular plurals such as children, feet, teeth, men and women
- Nouns that do not change, such as sheep and deer
How to play
- A picture appears showing one object or several.
- Two forms of the word are offered.
- Choose the form that matches what you can see.
- Ten questions complete a level, across eight levels grouped by plural rule.
Before you start
A child should be able to read simple nouns and count small quantities. The rules themselves are what the game teaches.
For teachers
The levels are grouped by rule rather than mixed, so you can assign the -es level after teaching that rule specifically. The irregular level is worth revisiting periodically - those forms fade without use in a way the regular ones do not.
For parents
When your child gets one wrong, say both forms aloud in a sentence rather than correcting the word alone. 'One tooth, two teeth' lands better than 'the answer is teeth'.
