About In, On, Under
Prepositions of place are almost impossible to define usefully to a young child and almost trivial to demonstrate. This game shows a hamster somewhere - in a box, on a table, under a chair - and asks the child to choose the word that describes it. The picture carries the meaning, so the word attaches to something concrete.
What this game teaches
- The prepositions in, on, under, behind, in front of and between
- Describing a spatial relationship in English
- Distinguishing prepositions that are easily confused
- Reading a picture carefully before answering
- Building toward using prepositions in sentences
How to play
- A picture appears with the hamster somewhere in the scene.
- Several position words are offered.
- Tap the one that describes where the hamster is.
- Five questions complete a level, across seven levels.
Before you start
A child should be able to read short words. Understanding the prepositions is what the game teaches.
For teachers
Act the prepositions out with a physical object before or after the game - put a pencil in, on and under a box while the class names each position. Children who have done it physically make far fewer errors on screen.
For parents
Ask where things are during the day. 'Where is your bag?' answered with a full phrase - 'under the table' - does exactly what the game does, in the child's own home.
