About Match Picture and Pronoun
Pronouns are a persistent difficulty for children learning English alongside Gujarati or Hindi, because those languages handle gender and number differently. Choosing between he, she, it and they is not a vocabulary problem but a matching problem, and this game makes the match visible by pairing each pronoun with a picture.
What this game teaches
- Choosing he, she, it or they to match a picture
- Understanding that 'it' is used for objects and most animals
- Using 'they' for more than one, regardless of gender
- Distinguishing subject pronouns from possessives
- Reducing the he-and-she confusion common among Gujarati and Hindi speakers
How to play
- A set of pictures and a set of pronouns appear.
- Tap a picture, then tap the pronoun that goes with it.
- Matched pairs are removed from the board.
- Clear the board to complete the round.
Before you start
A child should be able to read the pronoun words. Understanding what they mean is the point of the activity.
For teachers
The he-she confusion is so widespread in Gujarati-medium classrooms that it is worth treating as a specific teaching point rather than a slip. This game gives repeated low-stakes practice at exactly that distinction. Follow it with sentence work, since choosing a pronoun in isolation is easier than using one correctly in speech.
For parents
Use family photographs and ask the same question. Your child will apply the rule to people they know far more readily than to strangers on a screen.
