About Word Tracing Scratch Game
Young children need a reason to keep their finger moving deliberately across a surface, and scratching something away is a compelling one. As the overlay disappears the word underneath emerges, so the motor activity and the reading activity happen together rather than one being a reward for the other.
What this game teaches
- Controlled finger movement across a defined area
- Recognising Gujarati words as they emerge
- Sustained attention until a task is complete
- Connecting the shape of a word to its meaning
- A vocabulary of everyday Gujarati words
How to play
- A coloured overlay covers a hidden word.
- Swipe across it to scratch the overlay away.
- Read the word once it is revealed.
- Ten words complete a level, across twelve levels.
Before you start
No reading skill is strictly required to enjoy the scratching, but a child who recognises Gujarati letters will get much more from it.
For teachers
Suits the youngest children and those who find sitting still difficult, because the physical action holds attention that a tapping game does not. Ask children to read the word aloud once revealed, or the activity stays motor practice only.
For parents
Good for a child who resists sitting down to read. The scratching is what draws them in, and the reading arrives without being announced.
