Alphabet Wheel

About Alphabet Wheel

Recognising a letter when you have time to think about it and recognising it instantly are different skills, and only the second one makes reading fluent. This game removes the thinking time on purpose: twelve Gujarati letters sit on a spinning wheel, a target letter is named, and the child has to stop the wheel on it. Every correct answer makes the next spin faster, so a child who is merely working the letter out will run out of time before a child who simply knows it.

What this game teaches

  • Instant recognition of twelve common Gujarati consonants
  • Telling apart letters whose shapes are easily confused, such as ડ and દ
  • Reading a letter under time pressure rather than at leisure
  • Hand-eye timing alongside letter recognition
  • Building the automatic recall that fluent reading depends on

How to play

  1. Tap Start Game to set the wheel spinning.
  2. The letter you need to find is shown above the wheel.
  3. Tap the wait button to stop the wheel when your letter reaches the pointer.
  4. Each correct stop adds a point and makes the next spin faster.

Before you start

A child should already have met the Gujarati kakko and be able to name most consonants without help. This game builds speed on letters that are already familiar; it is a poor place to meet a letter for the first time.

For teachers

Useful as a quick diagnostic. A child who scores well knows the letters automatically; a child who stalls at higher speeds is still decoding each shape, which is worth knowing before moving them on to reading words. The twelve letters here are high-frequency consonants, so they are the right ones to have automatic. Run it on a projector and let the class call out the letter before the wheel stops.

For parents

Speed is the whole point, so resist telling your child the answer when they hesitate - the hesitation is the information. If they consistently miss the same letter, practise that one letter away from the game and come back. Short bursts work better here than long sessions, because the game gets genuinely demanding after a few points.
