About Gujarati Months
The Gujarati calendar runs alongside the Gregorian one in most Gujarati homes, and children hear its month names constantly in connection with festivals without necessarily knowing their order. This game puts them in sequence, which turns a set of familiar words into an actual calendar a child can reason with.
What this game teaches
- The twelve months of the Vikram Samvat calendar in order
- Reading each month name in the Gujarati script
- Connecting months to the festivals that fall in them
- Understanding that the Gujarati year begins after Diwali, not in January
- Comparing the Gujarati and Gregorian calendars
How to play
- Month names appear, and the child places or identifies them in order.
- Correct placements are confirmed.
- Work through the full year to complete the activity.
Before you start
A child should be able to read Gujarati script. Familiarity with major festivals helps a lot, since they anchor the months to something already known.
For teachers
Ties naturally to social studies and to festival calendars. Asking which month Diwali falls in, and then which month follows it, connects the sequence to lived experience rather than leaving it as a list to memorise.
For parents
Mention the Gujarati month when a festival comes round. Children learn calendars the way they learn most things - by hearing them used for something that matters.
