About Tell Clock Time in Gujarati

Telling the time in Gujarati is not a direct translation of the English form - the phrasing for half past and quarter to follows its own pattern, and the numerals are different too. A child who can read a clock in English may still be stuck when asked in Gujarati at home. This game practises the clock and the language together.

What this game teaches

  • Reading the hour and minute hands on an analogue clock
  • Gujarati numerals ૦ to ૯ in a time context
  • Gujarati expressions for o'clock, half past and quarter past
  • Matching a clock face to a spoken Gujarati time
  • Moving between Gujarati and English time expressions

How to play

  1. A clock face appears.
  2. Several Gujarati time expressions are offered.
  3. Tap the one that matches the clock.
  4. Five questions complete a level.

Before you start

A child should be able to read an analogue clock in at least one language, and should recognise Gujarati numerals. If the clock itself is new, start with the English time recognition game.

For teachers

Useful in Gujarati-medium classrooms and equally so in English-medium schools where children speak Gujarati at home. The vocabulary transfers directly to conversations with grandparents and neighbours, which gives it a purpose beyond the classroom that children notice.

For parents

Ask the time in Gujarati at home during the day. A child who has practised on screen and then answers a real question has genuinely learned it.
