About Picture Word Search
Finding a word in a grid requires knowing its spelling precisely, because a near-miss will not be there. This version pairs each target word with a picture, so a child works from meaning to spelling to location - three steps that reinforce each other and make the search genuinely educational rather than merely absorbing.
What this game teaches
- Recalling the spelling of a Gujarati word from its picture
- Scanning a grid systematically
- Recognising Gujarati letters in unfamiliar positions
- Reinforcing spelling through visual search
- Sustained concentration on a longer task
How to play
- A picture word list appears beside a grid of Gujarati letters.
- Find each word in the grid and select it.
- Found words are marked off the list.
- Use Reset Board to start the grid again; twenty levels are available.
Before you start
A child should be able to read Gujarati words and know most of the vocabulary. This reinforces spelling rather than teaching new words.
For teachers
More demanding than an English word search because the Gujarati script has more distinct characters and matras attached to consonants. Expect it to take longer, and treat completion of a single grid as a full activity.
For parents
If your child is stuck, tell them the first letter to look for rather than pointing at the word. Searching for one letter is a manageable step; searching for a whole word is not.
