About Merge Letters
The matra system is where most children learning Gujarati either click or get stuck. A consonant has a built-in vowel, and a matra replaces it - which means the same letter can be read several ways depending on a mark that may sit above, below, before or after it. This game works through the matras one at a time so each is learned properly before the next arrives.
What this game teaches
- Combining consonants with each matra to form syllables
- Recognising matra marks in all their positions
- Reading words that use a single matra type consistently
- Building toward words that mix several matras
- A vocabulary of everyday Gujarati words
How to play
- Letter pieces appear that need combining into a word.
- Tap them in order to form the target word.
- Reset if you want to try a different arrangement.
- Ten questions complete a level; twenty levels are organised by matra type.
Before you start
A child should know the Gujarati consonants. The matras are what this game teaches, so they can be entirely new.
For teachers
The level names identify which matra each level covers, so you can assign the one matching your current teaching directly rather than sending children to the game generally. Working through them in order matters more here than in most games - the matras build on each other.
For parents
Ask your child to read each completed word aloud. Matra errors are audible before they are visible, and hearing the wrong vowel is the fastest way to catch one.
