About Hindi Vowels Card
The Hindi vowels are the foundation of Devanagari, because every consonant carries one and the matras that modify them are derived from the vowel forms. Learning the swar properly first makes everything after it easier. This game presents them as cards with audio, so a child hears the sound alongside the shape.
What this game teaches
- All Hindi vowels from अ to अः
- The sound each vowel makes
- An example word beginning with each vowel
- Distinguishing the short and long pairs such as अ and आ
- Preparing for the matra forms used with consonants
How to play
- Vowel cards are laid out on screen.
- Tap a card to hear the vowel and see an example word.
- Use the listen-to-all button to hear the full sequence in order.
- Reset the cards to practise again.
Before you start
No prior knowledge is needed. This is usually a child's first structured contact with Devanagari.
For teachers
The short and long vowel pairs are the difficulty here - अ against आ, इ against ई. Children frequently hear them as the same sound. Play them consecutively and ask which is longer; naming the difference is what makes it audible.
For parents
Say each vowel with your child rather than only letting them listen. Producing the sound is what fixes it, and a child who only listens will recognise the vowel without being able to say it.
