About Gujarati Word Builder

Gujarati is written with consonants that carry an inherent vowel and matras that change it, which means building a word is not simply a matter of putting letters in a row. This game gives the child a set of letters and asks them to construct real words, so the relationship between the parts and the whole becomes something they handle rather than something they are told.

What this game teaches

  • Recognising Gujarati consonants and vowel signs
  • Combining letters into valid words
  • Understanding how a matra changes the sound of a consonant
  • Building a vocabulary of everyday Gujarati words
  • Left-to-right construction of the Gujarati script

How to play

  1. A set of Gujarati letters appears below an empty word space.
  2. Tap letters in order to build a word.
  3. Use Clear to start again or Hint if you are stuck.
  4. Add each completed word to your list; create at least five to finish the level.

Before you start

A child should recognise the Gujarati kakko - the basic consonant set. Matras can be new; the game gives useful practice with them.

For teachers

Because children build words rather than select them, this reveals what they can produce rather than only what they can recognise, and those are far apart at this stage. Ask children to read their completed words aloud - a word that was assembled by trial and error but cannot be read has not really been learned.

For parents

Ask your child what each word they built means. Building a valid Gujarati word without knowing its meaning is possible and not much use, and the question catches it gently.
