About Flag Game
Flags are a memorable way into geography because they are visual, distinctive and connected to real countries children hear about in the news and in sport. Recognising a flag is a small piece of knowledge that opens onto a much larger one, and children who learn flags tend to start asking where the countries actually are.
What this game teaches
- Recognising the flags of many countries
- Associating a flag with a country name
- Noticing shared design features between neighbouring countries
- Distinguishing flags that are easily confused
- Building curiosity about world geography
How to play
- Choose how many questions you want in the round.
- A flag appears with several country names.
- Tap the correct country.
- Your score is recorded at the end of the round.
Before you start
A child should be able to read country names. Some prior awareness of world geography helps but is not required.
For teachers
Pair with a world map so that each correct answer gets located as well as named. Flags learned without geography become trivia; flags learned with a map become knowledge. The adjustable round length makes it easy to fit a spare five minutes.
For parents
Look up one country your child got wrong and find out one fact about it. That habit turns a quiz into an interest.
