About Find A, B, C, D
Seeing the whole alphabet laid out with gaps in it is a different task from reciting it. The child has to scan, notice what is absent, and work out which letter belongs where - which requires holding the sequence in mind while looking at something that contradicts it. That combination is harder and more useful than either skill alone.
What this game teaches
- Scanning a grid to notice what is missing
- Alphabet order in both directions
- Recognising lowercase letters out of sequence
- Selecting the correct letter from a set of options
- Checking work before submitting
How to play
- An alphabet grid appears with some letters replaced by question marks.
- Tap an empty slot.
- Choose the letter that belongs there from the picker below.
- Check your answer; twenty levels increase the number of gaps.
Before you start
A child should recognise most lowercase letters and know the alphabet order reasonably well.
For teachers
The letter picker below the grid means this also rehearses recognition, not just recall. Children who fill the gaps by counting along from A are using the sequence correctly even if slowly - speed comes later.
For parents
Point at a gap and ask which letters sit either side of it. Working from both neighbours is faster and more reliable than counting from A.
