About Alphabet Learning Match
Learning an alphabet involves three separate things that adults have long since fused together: the shape of the letter, its name, and the sound it makes. A child who knows that the shape is called 'em' may still not know it says /m/. This game keeps an explore mode and a quiz mode side by side so a child can meet a letter properly before being tested on it.
What this game teaches
- Recognising every letter of the English or Gujarati alphabet by shape
- Connecting each letter to its name and to a word that starts with it
- Hearing correct pronunciation for each letter and example word
- Distinguishing letters that look similar
- Moving from recognition with support to recognition without it
How to play
- In explore mode, move through the letters one at a time with a picture and an example word.
- Tap the speaker to hear the letter and the word spoken.
- Switch to quiz mode to be shown a picture and choose the letter it starts with.
- Four levels of five letters each keep sessions short.
Before you start
No prior knowledge is needed - this is a starting point. If your child already knows most letters, go straight to quiz mode rather than working through explore mode first.
For teachers
The two modes map onto teaching and assessment. Use explore mode on a projector to introduce a letter to the whole class, then let children use quiz mode individually to check what has stuck. Because it covers both English and Gujarati, it suits dual-medium classrooms where children are building two alphabets at once.
For parents
Do explore mode together and quiz mode alone. The speaker button matters more than it looks - children who have only seen letters often mispronounce them, and hearing the sound alongside the shape prevents that setting in.
