About Birds Spin Wheel
Most children can name a handful of birds and see dozens more without knowing what they are called. This wheel builds that vocabulary in both English and Gujarati, and because the birds are ones found locally, the words attach to things a child can actually go outside and look at.
What this game teaches
- Bird names in English and Gujarati
- Recognising birds by their appearance
- Correct pronunciation in both languages
- Reading bird names at sight
- Noticing birds in the world outside the screen
How to play
- Tap Spin to turn the wheel.
- It stops on a bird.
- Listen to the name and read it on screen.
- Spin again to meet another bird.
Before you start
No prior knowledge is needed. This suits the youngest children as spoken vocabulary and older ones as reading practice.
For teachers
Connects naturally to environmental studies. Ask children which of these birds they have seen near home or school - the ones they recognise anchor the ones they do not.
For parents
Look out of a window together after playing and try to spot one. A bird named on a screen and then seen in a tree is a word that stays learned.
