About Read and Match

There is a large gap between reading words correctly and understanding what they say together, and children can hide on the wrong side of it for a long time. Matching a sentence to a picture closes that gap, because the only way to choose correctly is to have understood the whole sentence rather than decoded its parts.

What this game teaches

  • Reading a full sentence for meaning rather than word by word
  • Holding a sentence in mind while comparing it to options
  • Noticing the detail that distinguishes similar sentences
  • Connecting written language to a real situation
  • Building comprehension alongside decoding

How to play

  1. A set of sentences and a set of pictures appear.
  2. Read a sentence, then tap the picture that matches it.
  3. Matched pairs are removed.
  4. Clear all pairs to complete the level; twenty levels are available.

Before you start

A child should be able to read a short simple sentence aloud. Fluency is not required, but decoding every word from scratch will make the sentence hard to hold in mind.

For teachers

Sentences within a set are deliberately similar, so a child must read to the end rather than matching on the first noun. Children who match on a single keyword will get several wrong, and that error pattern is a useful signal that comprehension is lagging behind decoding.

For parents

Ask your child to read the sentence out loud before matching. If they can read it fluently but still choose wrongly, the issue is comprehension and worth mentioning to their teacher.
