About Word Unscramble

Unscrambling a word is spelling in reverse. Instead of producing letters in order from memory, the child has all the letters and must find the order - which means trying arrangements, noticing that some letter pairs look right and others do not, and using the picture to narrow it down. That trial process is where the learning is.

What this game teaches

  • Recognising plausible letter combinations in English
  • Using a picture clue to constrain possible answers
  • Trying an arrangement, evaluating it, and revising
  • Reinforcing the spelling of everyday nouns
  • Working with the whole word rather than letter by letter

How to play

  1. A picture appears with the letters of its name in scrambled order.
  2. Arrange the letters into the correct word.
  3. Change your mind freely - nothing is locked in until the word is complete.
  4. Move on to the next picture when the word is right.

Before you start

A child should know letter sounds and be able to read simple words. The pictures are of everyday objects, so vocabulary is rarely the obstacle - the ordering is.

For teachers

A good five-minute settle-down activity. If children are guessing randomly, teach one heuristic: find the vowel and think about where it usually sits. That single idea turns random rearrangement into reasoning.

For parents

Ask your child to say the word out loud before they start arranging. Hearing the word gives them the sounds in order, which is most of the answer.
