About English Months Wheel
Children learn the months as a chant and then discover that knowing the chant does not tell them what comes after August without starting from January. The wheel lands on months out of order, which forces recognition of each month individually and reveals whether the sequence is genuinely understood.
What this game teaches
- The twelve months of the year in English
- Recognising month names out of order
- Correct pronunciation of each month
- Which months belong to which season
- Preparing for calendar and date work
How to play
- Tap Spin to turn the wheel.
- It stops on a month.
- Listen to the name and read it on screen.
- Spin repeatedly to cover the full year.
Before you start
A child should have heard the months in order. Recognising them individually is what this adds.
For teachers
Ask which month comes next after the wheel stops. A child who has to recite from January to answer has memorised a sequence rather than learned an order, and that distinction matters for later date work.
For parents
Connect months to family events - birthdays, festivals, school holidays. A month attached to something that happens is remembered; a month in a list is not.
