About the crossword builder
Enter your own list of words and this tool arranges them into a crossword grid. Use it for this week's spellings, a topic vocabulary set, or the key terms from a chapter — the puzzle is built around whatever words you provide rather than a fixed list.
The result can be played on screen or printed as a worksheet. The printable version omits the site navigation and fits A4, so it can go straight into a lesson or a homework pack.
Because you supply the words, the same tool works for English, Gujarati and Hindi vocabulary, and for any subject where terminology needs practice.
The on-screen version gives immediate feedback, which suits independent practice, while the printed version suits homework and assessment where you want a child working without hints. Both come from the same word list, so you can set the puzzle on paper and let children check their answers on screen afterwards.
One practical note: enter your words before generating, and check the finished grid before printing. Occasionally a word will not interlock with any other and sits alone at the edge - swapping it for a word that shares a letter with something else in the list usually fixes it. Words are placed automatically, so regenerating with the same list can produce a different arrangement.
- Choosing good words
- Words between four and eight letters interlock best. A list of very short words produces a cramped grid, and very long words tend to sit unconnected at the edges.
- Making it harder
- A crossword tests recall rather than recognition, which is considerably more demanding than a matching exercise. Ten words is usually plenty for a primary class.
