Question: 1/10
MathematicsClass 1-2

About Which Has More

For a child at the very start of number work, comparing two quantities is a real cognitive step. It requires counting both sets accurately, holding both totals in mind, and then comparing them - three things at once. This game keeps the quantities small and the pictures clear so that the counting itself does not become the obstacle.

What this game teaches

  • One-to-one counting without skipping or double-counting
  • Holding two totals in mind long enough to compare them
  • The vocabulary of more, fewer and the same
  • Recognising that a group can look bigger while having fewer items
  • Building toward comparing written numbers

How to play

  1. Two groups of birds appear on screen.
  2. Count each group carefully.
  3. Tap the group that has more.
  4. Ten rounds complete a level, across thirty levels of increasing quantity.

Before you start

A child should be able to count to five reliably. Everything else is built here.

For teachers

Watch how children count rather than whether they are right. A child who points at each bird is counting; a child who scans and guesses is estimating. Both can produce correct answers at small quantities, and only one of them will still work at larger ones.

For parents

When your child answers, ask 'how many in each?' rather than 'are you sure?'. The first question makes them count; the second makes them doubt a correct answer.
