About Magic Mirror

Symmetry is easier to feel than to define. This game lets a child draw freely on one side of a line and watch the mirror image appear on the other in real time, so the relationship between a shape and its reflection is something they produce rather than something they are shown. The immediacy is what makes the idea land.

What this game teaches

  • What a line of symmetry is
  • That a reflection reverses direction but preserves shape
  • Predicting what a mirror image will look like
  • Recognising symmetry in letters, shapes and objects
  • Free drawing with a structured outcome

How to play

  1. A drawing area appears with a line down the middle.
  2. Draw on one side with your finger or mouse.
  3. The mirror image appears on the other side as you draw.
  4. Clear the canvas and start again whenever you like.

Before you start

No prior knowledge is needed. This is often a child's first encounter with symmetry as an idea rather than a word.

For teachers

Ask children to predict before drawing: if I draw a line going up to the right here, which way will the reflection go? Predicting and then checking is what turns play into understanding. Follow with folding paper and cutting shapes.

For parents

Hold a real mirror against a drawing afterwards. Seeing the same effect physically confirms that the screen was showing something true about the world.
